Expectations When Getting Your Tongue Pierced

So you’re considering getting your tongue pierced, but do not exactly know what to expect. Where should you go? When should you do it? What type of tongue ring do you need? These are all questions that are probably running through your mind if you are considering taking the plunge. While you may be nervous, by doing the proper research and taking proper care of your piercing, getting a new piece of body jewelry can be a very fun experience.

The first thing you must do is researching and visiting piercing salons. The best form of research you can do on this front is ask around. Do you have any friends who have pierced their tongue who can vouch for the person doing the piercing? This way you can see the work of the person, without you being their personal pin-cushion. When you visit a piercing salon, look around. Is it clean and sanitary? Are there any weird smells? Do you feel comfortable being there and talking to the person who is doing the piercing? These are all questions to ask yourself before you go through with the procedure. If you do not feel comfortable even being in the salon, you may want to look elsewhere.

After you have selected a location at which you will have your tongue pierced, select a date that works for both you and the person doing the procedure. Make sure you will not be giving any big speeches or participating in any important functions for about a week after the procedure as your tongue will more than likely swell and make talking – and eating – difficult. On that note, be sure to eat a good meal before you go to have the procedure done, you may be living on soup and milkshakes for a few days after the procedure is complete.

Once you have arrived at the piercing salon, you will need to pick out your tongue ring. For your first ring, the piercer may have a standard, plain but roomy tongue ring for you. This is to allow for swelling after the procedure is done and make the overall experience less painful. After the swelling has subsided, you will be able to pick out a more attractive tongue ring that reflects your personality.

Most people are concerned about the level of pain they may experience when piercing their tongue. Like any piercing, you are pretty much putting a hole, albeit a small hole, in your body, so there will more than likely be some pain associated with this. The amount depends solely on the person having the procedure done and their pain threshold. The pain can be managed though with ibuprofen and ice cubes following the procedure.

Tongue rings are a great way to express yourself in a non permanent way. Before you go through with the procedure, do some research to make sure you are going to a reputable establishment and in the end, you will have a pleasant experience and an attractive piece of body jewelry.

Stretch Your Piercing Horizon

Article by Fritz Ilagan

In many cultures, jewelry is an important aspect of individuality. It is used to express status and beauty and some people do modifications on their bodies to fully utilize a jewelry’s effect.

Stretching, in body piercing, is the purposeful enlargement of a healed fistula so that one can wear body piercing jewelry. It ranges from ear piercing (the most common) to nasal septum piercing, tongue piercing and lip piercing.

The process involved in this kind of body modification is by using tools that can stretch the fistula in small increments to lessen the potential of scarring or irreversible damage. These tools have a variety of sizes depending to the amount of stretching one desire to accomplish.

The key to a successful stretching is patience. If one tries to hasten the process by using a gauge too big, it can result for the fistula to tear and it is guaranteed to really hurt when that happens. Professionals advise to wait for a month or more in between stretch to let the fistula heal completely.

Tapering is the most common professional technique to stretch a piercing. It involves the use of a taper, a lubricated conical rod that is pushed to the fistula until the skin is level to the widest part of the tool. Body jewelry will then be pushed through that is parallel to the size of the taper.

After achieving the desired effect, one can now wear body jewelry that has been designed for stretched piercing. This jewelry comes in the form of plugs. Plugs are usually solid and cylindrical with o-rings fastened around the ends to keep it from falling. It can also be flared up in one or both ends. A variation of this jewelry is the flesh tunnel which is a plug that has a hollow middle. Ear weights are also popular jewelry pieces worn in stretched piercing.

Wild Tribe offers a wide array of tapers, plugs, flesh tunnels and ear weights for those who like to adorn their stretch piercing with interesting body jewelry. Wild Tribe products are one hundred percent made of natural materials ranging from bones and horns of water buffalo, amber and resin to many kinds of wood including sono, iron, teak, coco and palm.
