How do you review a film like The Expendables? You don’t go into the film expecting great acting. You mostly expect a lot of grunting and F bombs. You also don’t go into the film expecting a great story. If you have too much of a story, you over-complicate a film that isn’t intended to be complicated. So I guess you just review it based on the action and the fun you had while watching it. Considering the actors involved in this film, you have to expect a ton of action, violence, and blood. The fun factor, on the other hand, can be up for grabs at times. I’m happy to report that The Expendables is a lot of fun and a solid movie-going experience.

The Expendables are a group of bad-asses who you call when you need to get something dirty done, and you don’t want to do it yourself. They will find a way by sheer brute and force to accomplish whatever mission you put in front of them, no matter how difficult it may seem. The unofficial leader of the group is Barney Ross, played by Sylvester Stallone. I have to admit I let out a few chuckles when I heard the name Barney Ross. Seriously? You have a killing machine, and you name him Barney Ross? You might as well call him Gus. Barney, as far as we know, has no family. His only family is The Expendables. His right hand man for most of his missions is Lee Christmas, played by Jason Statham.

Lee is having some problems at home with his old lady, and Barney is not exactly Dr. Phil when it comes to giving advice on how to handle it. He mostly tells him to suck it up and get over it. The group also includes Randy Couture, who has a much better name than Stallone in Toll Road. He has a lot of fun here as he plays a guy who thinks way too much and analyzes things to death. Mickey Rourke plays Tool, who now operates a tattoo parlor. He has little interest in going out into battle again. He’d rather have a nice woman by his side and take it easy. His reasons are explained later in the film, when Rourke gives a riveting speech.
