Finding the Correct Ankle and Foot Tattoo

Article by Noel Christian

Today, one of the most trendy tattoo designs among women is the ankle and foot tattoo.

More popular during the spring and summer seasons, these prized designs add the perfect touch, but extra care must be taken because of the placement.

Most importantly, letting the foot and ankle fully heal-this may take as long as four weeks. The primary problem is that the foot is in motion a majority of the time, and even with flip-flops, rubbing can still occur, so much so that a touch up may be required to restore the damage to the image.

The optimum time of year for receiving an ankle or foot tattoo is the spring or summer if you live in a cold climate, that is, unless you can stay indoors and go barefoot for a few weeks. As good as that sounds, most people who work just don’t have the time, but with a little extra care you can keep the damage to a minimum.

Speaking generally, it’s best to just wear comfortably fitted shoes and try to avoid strenuous activities, as much as you can, that require a lot of movement. A popular shoe choice that offers great protection is the topless sandal, although they can be somewhat awkward at first.

It is also highly advised that you further care for the new tattoo with a fine layer of Vaseline, followed by a sheet of glad wrap, then socks and shoes, if you are going to be moving around a lot.

Infections are also a possibility that should be regularly checked on. Without a doubt your feet will get grimy, more often than most other parts of the body, creating a greater risk of infection. This can be kept to a minimum by more frequent wash ups and by reapplying the protective coating.

As with any tattoo being inked on thin skin, and over bone, tattoos on the feet can be more painful than others, equal to that of a rib or the shoulder blade. The pain varies depending on who you ask, but more typically described as slight to moderately more.

If you are just thinking or have already decided on a foot or ankle tattoo, there are a few extra things that you should know about. The layers of the skin covering your feet are periodically renewed (exfoliation) more than any other part of the body, occasionally resulting in a small loss of color. This means that it is highly likely that you will need touch-up work done sometime in the future.

One final thing to think about when planning a foot or ankle tattoo is the ability of your tattoo artist, making sure that they have time spent working on thin skinned tattoos. And don’t be shy when asking about their experience and also ask to see pictures of foot and ankle work they have done.

The difference between a good and bad foot and ankle tattoo could be as simple as placing the ink too shallow or too deep, making an expert artist all the more important when tattooing thinner skin…and as with all sun exposed tattoos, use high quality sun protection.
