You may have started with pierced ears. That’s usually the first step since earrings for pierced ears are found everywhere. Then, maybe you ventured to your belly button and got that pierced. There are some very sexy belly button rings that are great to show off with that new outfit or bikini. For some, the next body part to be pierced is the tongue. It’s amazing all the styles of tongue rings that are available to show off your individuality. Try a Playboy branded barbell, a vibrating or diamond stud, or even a smiley face. Tongue rings come in many shapes and sizes. However, before you get to these fashionable options, you must go with a basic surgical steel barbell and take steps to properly care for your new piercing.
Your mouth has enzymes which naturally fight off bacteria so experiencing an infection from a tongue piercing is rare. In fact, more harm can be done to a new piercing by using too much of the mouthwash recommended. All that swishing could kill some of the useful natural enzymes in your mouth!
The best option is to rinse with the mouthwash no more than twice a day. The piercing itself should be cleaned in the morning and before going to bed with a simple solution of salt and water. Be sure your own hands are clean before touching the piercing.
When you experience swelling, put some ice chips on your tongue and just let them melt. This will help reduce any inflammation. It’s also a good idea to plan on switching to a liquid diet for a few days. Ice cream is allowed, but avoid hard and crunchy foods. Try some smoothies, fruit juices and clear liquids.
Do not try to remove the initial barbell on your own. Yes, you are going to be anxious to put in your new tongue ring, but wait to get some help from a professional. They will be better able to check on the piercing to be certain that it has healed properly and is ready for full exposure.
And speaking of exposure, keep your new piercing away from anything that could introduce irritants to the area. This includes smoking, chewing tobacco or oral sex. All normal activities can be resumed after the healing process has been completed; however, avoid a longer healing process than is necessary by following our tips for the best healing.
If at any time you are not comfortable with your piercing, see a doctor or get it removed. Although an infection is rare sometimes our bodies have different reactions. If in doubt, just get it check out.
After all your post piercing care is complete, you will be free to choose from a variety of tongue ring jewelry. You can play it down at work with a clear spacer, and then play it up when you go out with your favorite color M&M, a soccer ball, Betty Boop or the Green Hulk. Bling up your tongue and have fun.

Body Jewellery – A Guide to Changing Your Piercing

We all understand the temptation to change your initial jewelry as soon as possible, especially with such a wide variety of great body jewelry that allows you to show off your piercing in your own personal style. But we can’t stress enough how important it is to wait for the initial healing period before attempting to change your piercing. It’s critical to the long-term well being of your piercing.
Unless there’s a problem with the size, material, or type of jewelry used for the piercing, keep it in for the entire duration of the initial healing period. (link to healing chart page)
If you do need to change the jewelry, consult a professional piercer.
When you’re ready you to change your jewellery, it’s worth the trip to your piercing studio. The change is usually included with the initial price of the piercing. Studios that did not perform your piercing can also help you, and usually charge a small fee for the service.
General tips for changing your jewellery:
- Keep it clean. Wash your hands, jewellery, and piercing area with a mild antibacterial soap.
- The new jewellery should be the same gauge (thickness) as the original jewellery (that is, unless you are stretching).
- It’s easier to insert the new body jewellery if you lubricate the jewellery and the piercing area with antibacterial soap or a water-based lubricant. To lubricate the piercing area, put a dab on the existing body jewellery and rotate it.
- A hot shower or bath will help soften the skin so the piercing can be changed more easily.
When you’re ready to change your navel piercing yourself, follow these steps:
1. Wash your hands, jewellery, and piercing area with antibacterial soap.
2. Unscrew the ball (depending on the style, it’s either at the top or bottom of the belly ring)
3. Insert the belly ring barbell into your piercing hole starting from the bottom (inside) of the navel. Push the barbell up and out of the top hole.
4. Screw the ball on the barbell
5. Rewash the entire area and you’re done!
